Miller, Trump, and the Central Park Five

American Hospitality Episode 38-26

Miller, Trump, and the Central Park Five

Stephen Miller used his media connections to stand up for three white Lacrosse players who had been accused of raping a black woman. In the end, the three players were exonerated and were each awarded $20 million after suffering a year of wrongful accusation. None of them served any jail time.

Speaking out in their defense earned Stephen Miller national press attention and secured him mentorship under the Alt-Right's future leader Richard Spencer. [3]

Miller tried to imagine what would have happened had the scenario been flipped—if the three athletes had been black and their accuser white.

In a situation where that scenario was flipped, Donald Trump took out full page ads urging the death penalty for "four black youths and a Hispanic youth who were accused of a brutal rape [of a white woman] in New York."[1][2]

"According to defendant Yusef Salaam, quoted in a February 2016 article in The Guardian, Trump "was the fire starter" in 1989, as "common citizens were being manipulated and swayed into believing that we were guilty." Salaam said his family received death threats after papers ran Trump's full-page ad urging the death penalty." [4]

In July 2002, the wrongfully accused ‘Central Park Five’ were exonerated when the real perpetrator confessed, supported by confirmatory DNA evidence. [2]

"Santana, Salaam, McCray, and Richardson each received around $7.1 million from the city for their years in prison, while Wise received $12.2 million because he had served six additional years." [2]
