The Cotton of Richard Spencer's Alt-Right

American Hospitality Episode 38-24

The Cotton of Richard Spencer's Alt-Right

At a conference in 2016, celebrating his Alt-Right movement, Richard Spencer affirmed his beliefs, stating “we recognize a central lie of American race relations. We don’t exploit other groups—we don’t gain anything from their presence. They need us, and not the other way around." [1]

Spencer’s wealth is primarily generated by farms in Louisiana.  Farms that are tended by non-whites; the very people he claims not to need.

"Spencer, along with his mother and sister, are absentee landlords of 5,200 acres of cotton and corn fields in an impoverished, largely African American region of Louisiana." [2]

These farms are "subsidized by the federal government. From 2008 through 2015", the Spencers "received more than $2 million in government subsidies." [2][3]

Despite Spencer's financial reliance on non-white labor and on government programs designed to support the local agricultural economy, he insisted that "America was, until this past generation, a white country, designed for ourselves and our posterity. It is our creation, it is our inheritance, and it belongs to us." [1]

"According to Spencer, immigration ‘is a kind of proxy war—and maybe a last stand—for White Americans, who are undergoing a painful recognition that, unless dramatic action is taken, their grandchildren will live in a country that is alien and hostile’" [6]

The ‘proxy war’ to which Spencer refers, more commonly called ‘Great Replacement Theory,’ is a conspiratorial hypothesis, contending that liberals are using pro-immigration policies to intentionally dilute the vitality of the White Republican electorate.

"White supremacists … have long contended that the country’s demographic changes will lead to an extermination of the white race and culture." [5]

The country is diversifying; but, as of 2024, the United States is 75 percent white. [4]
